Ruth wins Oxbridge success

Local girl Ruth Holmes has added Oxbridge success to her long list of achievements. The 18-year old King's College pupil from Nailsbourne has won a place to read Physiological Sciences at St Catherine's College, Oxford.

Ruth was hitting the headlines last term when she became the the fastest under 18 girl at orienteering in Great Britain. Since then she has been training with the Great Britain squad in Austria, with a warm weather training trip to Portugal still to come at Easter.

She is also an extremely talented musician, having played trumpet in the Somerset County Youth Orchestra, and this year she is house captain of Taylor House, one of the three girls' houses at King's.

"This is exactly the course I wanted to study," said Ruth. "I'm hoping I'll be able to combine research into the physiology of the human body with my sporting interests, and maybe eventually go into sports research development. Oxford University has the reputation of being the top university in the world for this branch of science, so I'm counting myself extremely lucky!"
