Pupils benefit from new physiotherapy collaboration

06/12/2011
In an exciting new venture King's College has taken the step this term of engaging the Exeter Physio Sports and Spinal Clinic (www.exeterphysio.co.uk) to work with its sports scholars and pupils, in order to provide high quality physiotherapy services to those who need it. They have experience with Exeter Chiefs Rugby and England RFU, Exeter City FC, European Tour Golf, GB basketball and rowing. This experience will allow our pupils to benefit from immediate high quality treatment when they need it most.
The collaboration aims to deliver acute injury treatment / management to maximise recovery, with an induction and assessment session for all new scholars attending. Additionally, those who need it can go on to have 'Movement Analysis' in order to discover if there are any long standing injuries which need addressing. Exeter Physio have also provided an extensive Injury Prevention and Treatment seminar open to all pupils, so that messages of good practice can be promoted throughout the school. This has covered everything from prehab to rehab, hydration, and what to do immediately after an injury has occurred, and how pupils can successfully manage those crucial hours and days following an incident. So far all aspects of this new partnership have been very well received with noticeable improvements.
The service has been very successful at keeping individual athletes on track with their performance, and both Co-Directors of Sport, Nick Gresswell and Sara Similien, have been impressed with the turnaround of injuries and the quality of advice and treatment that pupils have been receiving. It has certainly had a positive effect on keeping the rugby and hockey teams running at full capacity this term.
Although originally engaged through the sport scholars programme, Exeter Physio are available to see any pupil for any issue that requires physiotherapy services. Currently a number of pupils are having treatment for non-related sports issues or referrals after surgery which will lead to them continuing to take a full and active part in the school's extensive games programme. We are looking forward to building the partnership between King's College and Exeter Physio strongly, to ensure that all King's College pupils and sports scholars can perform to the best of their ability and push their physical performance safely.
