Will and Matt ESU Mace Regional Champions

On Thursday 2 March Will Cashmore and Matthew Thorne became the South West Regional Champions in the English Speaking Union (ESU) Mace, the UK’s biggest debating competition.

Having first entered the competition in October, and the boys have now got through three rounds. In the most recent debate King’s were proposing the motion ‘This house would allow doctors to lie to their patients in order to create or enhance a placebo effect.’ By analysing the advantages of placebo clearly, and discussing the limitations of the risks of the lie, Will and Matt won the debate, against Bristol Grammar School.

However, to go through, King’s also had to beat the four other teams in the round: Kingswood School, (Bath), Bishop Wordsworth’s School (Salisbury), South Wilts Grammar School (Salisbury) and Exeter College.

The next stage will be the national final at Dartmouth House in London, where King’s will be up against the winners from the other UK regions.
