West of England Rugby 7s
On Sunday 26 February 36 teams from across the South West took part in the West of England rugby 7s competition at the U14, U16 and U18 age groups. Organised by King’s College, and hosted across three separate venues, this is one of the largest rugby 7s tournaments in the calendar.
King’s entered teams at all age
groups and produced a number of fantastic performances throughout the day. The
U16s battled hard in a competitive age group, winning three of their pool matches
with some excellent team and individual performances. The U14s showed great
determination as they finished runners up in their pool and made the Plate
final against Cheltenham College. In a tight game it was the overall team
fitness and strong running of Hugo Larkin that proved the difference. The U14s
won the final 27-7.
The U18s travelled to Taunton
RFC and showed tremendous team spirit to finish as runners up in their pool as
well, beating the likes of Mount Kelly and Colston’s. Kicking the day off against
a well-structured Blundell’s team, in a tough and hugely physical game, King’s then
proved too strong for Taunton School in the Plate final, going on to claim the
trophy in that event as well.
Nick Gresswell the Director of Sport and
Head of Rugby at King’s, who was heavily involved in the organisation of the event
said: “The day was a huge success with all of the schools entering into the
spirit of the occasion. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Taunton
RFC, Taunton School, Queen’s College and
King’s College for allowing the use
of their facilities for the event to take place. A huge thank you must also go to the Somerset County RFU Referee
Society who supplied referees at all of the venues.”
The U18s can look forward to the
Colston’s 7s tournament on the 5 March and then onto Rosslyn Park in the
last week of term. This year King’s will enter U18, U16 and U14 teams.
