Our Maddie Hinch Sports Scholar to Captain UK Lions U14 Hockey Squad
Ollie Drummond, who was awarded the Maddie Hinch Hockey Scholarship to King’s College in Taunton in 2017, has just been appointed captain of the UK Lions Under 14 squad.
The Lions team is selected from those who were involved with the Under 13 Boys UK Festival of Hockey that takes place in Nottingham every June, where ten teams compete from all over the UK.
For the last three years the King’s youngster, who lives locally and plays his hockey for Taunton Vale, has been selected for, and represented, the South West team. This summer Ollie captained the team and was named Player of the Tournament.
Thirty boys have been selected to represent the Under 14 UK Lions .The squad train together every month, playing against older age group local sides.
Ollie toured to Sardinia in December – playing local Sardinian and Italian teams – and in June he played in Glasgow against both Scotland and Ulster Under 16s. In August he went to Belfast and played against a variety of older teams.
The Taunton Vale player’s first game in charge was against Leicester Under 16s last Sunday, and he will captain the squad when they return to Sardinia in December.
Ollie is also a part of the England Hockey pathway and is entering his third year in the U15 Performance Centre.
Clare Hayes, Director of Hockey at King’s College said: “This is a great achievement for Ollie who joined us earlier this year on the Maddie Hinch Scholarship. He works very hard and fully deserves this recognition.”
The Maddie Hinch Scholarship at King’s College is open to boys and girls joining the school in September 2018 in Year 9, who demonstrate outstanding potential in hockey. For further details please contact: firstname.lastname@example.org / 01823 328204.
