Fin Surfs His Way to the Junior World Championships in Japan

Fourth Form pupil Fin Mathews has been enjoying surfing in the warm waters of the UK recently.

In the Rip Curl European GromSearch 2017 competition in Croyde, North Devon, Fin came second in his heat, and finished third overall in the final.

Since its inception in Australia in 1999, the GromSearch series has continually unearthed the next generation of surfing stars. The GromSearch is seen by most of the ‘groms’ as the best event in the world. It offers young surfers under 16 (girls and boys) the chance to show off their talents in the environment of a friendly and relaxed competition. Rip Curl will be travelling to 12 famous beaches in six European countries (France, Spain, Portugal, United Kingdom, Italy and the Netherlands) searching for the best up-and-coming surfers.

Commenting on his recent success, Fin said:

“Next, I will be heading to the worlds (VISSLA ISA World Junior Surfing Championship) in Japan in September. I'm training all through summer in France to gain my best surfing and to increase my chances of getting a good placing in the worlds. There will be a few junior pro events in France that I’m planning to attend, that would hopefully see me get on the junior tour with the best surfers of my age.”
