Music Department Spread Christmas Cheer
Much to the enjoyment of the school community, our musicians spread a little Christmas magic during the last weeks of term. Every year our music events prove popular, especially at this time of year, and are perfect for showcasing the many talents of our musicians and singers.
Our first music performance was in late October, when a group of talented King’s singers gathered in the school Chapel to serenade classical concert-goers with our annual Vocal Concert.
Ably led by our expert vocal coaches, the pupils sang across a range of genres and eras. The evening covered music from composers such as Brahms and Farmer, as well as lively numbers from musicals including South Pacific, Les Misérables, and The King and I.
Director of Music, Colin Albery, said: “We have such a range of talent among our musicians here at King’s. This concert is one of many that provides an outlet for them to showcase these talents.”
With Christmas fast approaching, it was finally appropriate to celebrate the season with our annual Christmas Concert. A well-attended affair, this vibrant event sees pupils from across the school assemble for an evening of festive fun.
From duets of White Christmas to a jazzy rendition of Jingle Bells, there is always something to get even the biggest Scrooge tapping along.
As is tradition, our end-of-year musical production became the real talk of the school. This time, it was the turn of the fabulous fifties-era musical, Grease. Still as relevant to audiences today, our actors really captured the spirit of the story.
Across four nights in the penultimate week of term, the school theatre was transformed into Rydell High, taking audiences back to the summer nights of 1950s America. The musical was full of iconic moments and the cast made the characters their own. The result was a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining performance.
Christmas at the Races
With warm fuzzy feelings in our hearts, it was then time to brave the cold as our Brass Group and Chamber Choir journeyed to Taunton Racecourse for their Christmas fixture.
Despite the cool weather, our musicians enjoyed serenading race-goers with traditional yuletide carols including Away in a Manger and We Wish You a Merry Christmas.
And to wrap up our celebrations, we held our annual Carol Services. The Chapel heaved under the weight of pupils, staff, friends and family as the pews were packed with an eager congregation.
Our School Choir gave a superb performance and the service was, as always, both moving and thought-provoking. The evening’s festivities provided a delightful end to a long, busy and successful Michaelmas Term. We hope that everyone is looking forward to some family time over the holidays, and we wish everyone in the King’s Schools community a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
