Third form pupil Abby Hughes recently competed in the Somerset U15 3000m Race Walk Championships.

This was the first time Abby had ever entered the event, having focused on long distance running and cross-country events at 1500m and 3000m.

Abby had been asked to attend the Somerset Schools Athletics training days, where there was the opportunity to practice lots of different events. She decided to try race walking, and after the event, was approached by the coach, who felt she had potential and suggested Abby should enter the county race walking championships.

Smashing the previous championship record by three minutes, in a time of 17m 02.05s, Abby was astounded when she walked home to take the Somerset title. She now ranks 4th in the country in the U15 girls’ category.

She will now progress to the South West Championships at the end of June in an attempt to qualify for the National Championships in September.

Abby’s next target is to break the 16m 30s barrier. This is the expected time set by England Athletics for the top six at the National Championships.

Commenting, Abby said: “I couldn’t believe it when I won the event – at the training sessions, I really did just decide to give it a go … to then have someone see potential in me was great. But to go on and win and by such a margin was incredible. I’m looking forward to the next race in June.”
