Early last month, 13 Lower Sixth pupils, accompanied by Dr Stone and Mr Smith, travelled to St Catherine’s College, Oxford, to experience life at university.

Following a talk by the Undergraduate Admissions staff, the pupils were given tours of the college by current students and took the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions about the application process and student life.

After lunch in the city, the group met Will Cashmore OA (Tuckwell, 2017) and Maddie Parr OA (Meynell, 2015), who gave tours of their own colleges, Queen’s and Trinity respectively. The pair talked about their courses and experience of the intense working life. Will is currently reading PPE and Maddie, Philosophy and Theology.

By chance, they also met Grace Albery OA (Meynell, 2017) emerging from her first examination, as well as two of Dr Stone’s former students, who linked up with our pupils to discuss their prospects.

The day was a thought-provoking and informative one. Many of our Lower Sixth are already engaged in the necessary wider reading and academic study expected of applicants to the most competitive universities, but this visit certainly whetted appetites further for what study in such an academically exciting environment could offer.
