A group of Fourth Form girls studying French at King’s College have won the South West Regional Pop Video Competition run by the Institut Français.

The competition was open to any pupil or group of pupils in full-time education, with three different age categories.

On entering the 12-15 years’ category, the girls were faced with the challenge of creating their own original song as well as writing, performing and editing the pop video.

Entitled Où est l’amour? (Where is the love?), the song created by the group, re-tells a story about love – a fickle boy and the girl whose heart is broken. The melody is hauntingly beautiful, and the lyrics incredibly mature.

Hannah Johnston is the lead vocalist, with Amelie Ridley on piano. Lara Chapple/Anastasia Woodard play the fickle boy, Sienna Hill-Lamey the temptress and Hattie Lindsay-Coombs the spurned lover.

Florence Cole, Sophie Cannons, Malaika Njema and Kitty Messenger were involved in researching the music, filming on location and writing the lyrics.

Head of Modern Foreign Languages, Lucy Cruttenden was keen for her pupils to take part in the competition.

Commenting, she said: “As a department we love finding opportunities for pupils to really engage with languages and I knew the Fourth Form would enjoy rising to the challenge of this competition. I was delighted by the enthusiasm and determination they showed as they worked together to achieve this amazing outcome. The girls behind Où est l’amour? displayed great team working skills during the song’s development, making the most of their team members’ linguistic, research, musical, dancing and filming abilities. There was a real buzz in the classroom during the preparation time, with a cacophony of different styles of music being played, alongside lyricists testing out rhyme patterns and storyboards being drawn for the video. I’m thrilled that the girls have won the regional competition; fingers crossed for the national final!”
