Taunton is Somerset’s County town and is steeped in history. Situated in close proximity to our beautiful coastline it is the gateway to the South West of England and is a busy yet safe market town with an excellent reputation for outstanding education.
King's College is located within fifteen minutes walking distance of the town centre, and is a ten minute drive from the train station, and a 5-10 minute drive from the bus station. Local shops sell a variety of produce: there are supermarkets, as well as independent and high street retailers in abundance.
Pupils have town time each Wednesday afternoon when they are able to walk into town to access the local amenities. There are lots of small shops and larger supermarkets located centrally as well as banks and restaurants.
For families coming to stay there are also small B & Bs a short walking distance from King’s as well as larger hotels a short taxi journey away.
The Local Area
Taunton is home to excellent sporting facilities including the County Cricket ground, football and rugby clubs and a racecourse. The town also makes an ideal base for exploring the nearby Blackdown Hills, a strip of countryside along the Devon - Somerset border which were designated an area of outstanding natural beauty in 1991.
The nearby Quantock Hills are another local feature to be enjoyed. Each year, many of our pupils undertake navigation exercises as part of their training for the annual Ten Tors event, as well as for their DofE Gold and Bronze awards.
With Bath, Bristol and Exeter on its doorstep, Taunton is situated in a great location and has excellent transport links to London and other major cities in the UK. Both Exeter and Bristol Airports are less than 40 miles away and Heathrow Airport is a 2.5 hour journey by car. London can be reached by train in 1 hour and 45 minutes.
